Every Texan knows that our weather doesn’t do anything halfway. From blistering summer heatwaves to sudden cold fronts, our fences take a beating year-round. But nothing tests the structural integrity of a privacy fence quite like the relentless, sweeping Texas wind.
When you look at a freshly built wood fence, it’s easy to focus on the quality of the pickets or the straightness of the posts. However, the most critical component keeping that fence upright and intact is a tiny piece of hardware: the nail.
At our company, we refuse to cut corners with standard hardware. Here is why we prefer to use specialized electro-galvanized nails instead of conventional smooth shank nails—and why it makes all the difference for your property.
Conventional nails have a smooth, flat surface barrel. They rely entirely on the natural friction of the wood squeezing against the metal to stay in place.
When high winds hit a fence line, the pickets act like giant sails. The wind forces push and pull against the panels, creating a constant rocking motion. Over time, this movement forces smooth nails to slowly slide outward—a frustrating problem known as “nail backing” or “nail popping”. Once a smooth nail backs out even a fraction of an inch, the wind gains leverage, eventually ripping pickets clean off the rails.
Instead of a smooth barrel, our specialized nails feature machine-rolled grooves along the entire shaft. When driven into the wood, the fibers wedge tightly into these deep grooves. This creates a permanent, mechanical lock—a “deadbolt effect” that increases holding power by up to 300% over standard smooth nails. Even under extreme wind loads, these nails refuse to budge.
Texas weather is a roller coaster of humidity and intense dry heat. Wood is a natural, porous material that acts like a sponge; it expands when it rains and shrinks when baked under the Texas sun.
This continuous expansion and contraction cycle naturally loosens the grip around traditional smooth nails. Because smooth nails have no texture to “bite” into the wood, the shifting wood fibers essentially push them out over time. Ring-shank nails hold their ground through every season. Because the wood fibers stay permanently locked inside the rings, the natural swelling and shrinking of the wood only tightens the mechanical bond.
When a fence board begins to warp due to sun exposure, it exerts a massive pulling force on the nail head. Smooth nails offer very little resistance. As the board warps, it easily pulls away from a smooth nail, leaving an unsightly, unstable, and rattling fence panel.
The incredible holding power of textured “ring-shank fasteners” prevents pickets from warping away from the runners. By keeping the pickets tightly secured flat against the rails, the entire fence distributes the wind load evenly, minimizing structural twisting (racking) and eliminating annoying wind rattles.
Using a high-performance nail shank won’t matter if the nail rusts apart in a few years. Raw steel nails begin to corrode almost immediately when exposed to outdoor moisture, leaving ugly, dark streaks running down your beautiful wood panels.
The electro-galvanized coating on our nails introduces a uniform layer of protective zinc. This layer acts as a sacrificial barrier, fighting off moisture, humidity, and lawn sprinklers to ensure your fence remains structurally sound and visually pristine without unsightly rust bleeding.
A fence is a significant investment in your home’s security, privacy, and curb appeal. Building a fence with basic, smooth-shank nails might save a few dollars upfront, but a single severe Texas windstorm can easily rack up hundreds of dollars in repair bills for blown-off pickets.
By anchoring every single picket with premium, rust-resistant ring-shank nails, Discount Fence can better ensure your fence is structurally locked, weather-proofed, and fully prepared to stand tall against whatever the Texas sky throws its way
